Plunderphonics is an electronic genre characterized by its overt use of samples, and it falls under the umbrella of sound collage. Often, the source material is manipulated until the original tune is virtually unrecognizable. Development of the process is when musicians plunder familiar songs or broadcasts, manipulating, looping, and overlaying new material and sounds on top until the original piece is masked and then removed, artists recontextualize the original audio to produce a completely new piece of art.
